PULASKI COUNTY, Ark. -- Congratulations to Sylvan Hills Middle teacher, Ms. Lillian Hemphill for being selected as a PBS NewsHour Classroom Invention Education Fellow for the 2023-2024 school year.
"Honestly, I am simply speechless,” said Hemphill. “As a lifelong viewer of PBS and the PBS NewsHour, I am deeply humbled to be one of the 22 educators selected as an Invention Education Fellow for the 23-24 school year. However, I am more excited to share this honor with my students at Sylvan Hills Middle School as we model our amazing classroom for others to follow."
This is just the second year of the Invention Education Fellowship. Invention Education is a standards-based learning approach that teaches students how to be inventors and bring out their entrepreneurial spirit.
Every month, the 22 fellows from across the U.S. meet virtually to learn about the steps of the invention process, how to use the news, media literacy, and observation to solve problems. The fellows include teachers from upper-elementary, middle, and high school with focus areas of STEM, social studies, English, and journalism.
